‘We’ve cherished bringing up our family here, with the convenience of great parks and schools, and a house that has everything you need,’ says current owner Charlotte Davidson. Photo – Joel Noon.

‘One of my favourite parts of the house is the kitchen. I will certainly miss the outlook, an uninterrupted view to the north and the warmth the sun brings in the colder months,’ says Charlotte. Photo – Joel Noon.

Charlotte Davidson and James Pridgeon, owners of Steel Window Design, purchased this 1920s Brunswick property five years ago with a vision to completely transform the home. They designed the renovation themselves, replacing a dated addition with a sophisticated open-plan domain and reorienting the living spaces north. ‘We literally gutted it, replacing every part of the home. Our dream was to have the original front, and a very modern extension,’ says Charlotte.

Naturally, as owners of a steel windows company, Charlotte and James made steel a feature of the new interiors. Industrial-style windows now frame the entire open-plan living area looking out to the outdoor deck and evergreen, low-maintenance garden. ‘It’s not overlooked and feels like you’re in a green sanctuary. It also faces north so there is endless sun,’ Charlotte says.

While elegant and luxurious, this home does not compromise on liveability. Inside are four bedrooms, a study nook, two additional multipurpose spaces in the garage and attic, and modern comforts that make every day just that little bit easier!  ‘We love waking up on a cold winter’s morning to a brilliantly warm bathroom floor; curling up in front of the fire in the colder months; having endless storage; and one of our best decisions, installing two dishwashers — a lifesaver when you have people over!’ Charlotte says. The property also contains a 8.2kW solar system and is deliberately one storey to be as practical as possible.

Last but not least — the location! ‘This house captures the essence of Brunswick,’ says Charlotte. ‘Most Saturdays begin at Mile End Bagels, a visit to Harper & Blohm on Sydney Road (the best cheese shop in Melbourne), and picking up our essentials from La Manna Fresh. It’s why we love this side of Brunswick.’

36 Fourth Avenue, Brunswick, Victoria is listed with Charlie Barham and Andrew De Angelis at Nelson Alexander and will go to auction on Saturday June 18 at 1.30pm.
