On Sunday, March 3rd, hundreds of Gorman enthusiasts gathered in the sculpture garden at Heide Museum of Modern Art to witness the reveal of their latest capsule collection. The latest range is a ‘tribute of their journey so far’ and over the next two months, Gorman will release 10 brand new capsule collections alongside ten previous artist collaborations.

The Ten Years of Collaborating project is accompanied by a two-week pop-up exhibition at Heide, pairing garments with the artworks that inspired them including works by Rachel Castle, Megan Grant, Claire Johnson, Dana Kinter, Studio Elke, Rhys Lee, Ellie Malin, Mirka Mora, Liz Payne and Miranda Skoczek. Prepare your eyes for colour and pizzaz!

Over the past decade, Gorman has worked on 80 collaborations with artists, designers, and makers around the world – somehow always retaining a distinct ‘Gorman’ look, despite the wide range of co-producers.

Lisa Gorman told us more…

How did this exhibition come about?

As the major sponsor of the Mirka Mora Pas De Deux – Drawings And Dolls exhibition, we established a good working relationship with Heide and thought it would be an incredible space to present a runway and exhibition. It was like the stars aligned. Our 10th-year collaboration celebration coincided with the Mirka Mora exhibition at Heide and the opening of VAMFF. So in conjunction with the runway, we decided to present an exhibition with 10 of our favourite Australian artists, which will be on show for the next two weeks.

How important have collaborations with artist been to the Gorman brand and why do you think they have been so ecstatically received?

Collaborations allow us to deliver unique collections every season and they’ve ultimately become part of the signature of the Gorman brand.  The collections allow our customers to engage with these artists and their work in a new way.

What can visitors to the exhibition expect and why should they not miss this showcase?

They can expect to see original works from each of the artists, a few of which have been created especially for the exhibition, as well as highlight styles from the collection including one-off exhibition pieces.

What do you think is the secret to a successful collaboration?

Collaborating is a two-way street. A successful collaboration comes about when there is a clear understanding of the end goal.  A lot of time goes into translating the artists work into textiles, so strong communication between us and the artist is imperative for a successful collection.

What’s next for Gorman?

A very special two-year project that will be revealed in August…

Take a scroll through Gorman’s collection lookbook online and reminisce on patterns past, while filling your shopping cart with designs of present and future!
